RBA @ Bradford yesterday...do I still want to be a member?

Firstly I have been proud to be a member of the RBA and have a great deal of respect for certain people who make the RBA happen for the benefit of others and to benefit the shots. Whilst I tend to keep myself to myself I have met and enjoyed the company of RBA members over a few beers and have obviously benfited personally from using the away travel.

Yesterday however at Bradford I was embarrassed and ashamed to be a member of the RBA. The chanting of "Engerland! Engerland!" together with "were ****e and we're English" was totally out of order. Eventually I had enough and stood up and challenged the chants which at the time I did not realise who was involved in the chanting. I was shocked to see and hear some of the RBA members I had respected leading the singing. I do not need to name these people coz they know who they are. After I stood up and challenged the chanting it did stop, wether this was because I challenged it I am not sure.

Together with this chanting we also had the issue of another person I respect leaving with part of a Bradford City seat.

IMO a lot of damage was done to the RBA's postive reputation yesterday and  again IMO undoes  some of fantastic work undertaken by the RBA and has a knock on effect to ATFC. The RBA has worked hard in the past to distance itself from the negative image of football hoolies but yet yesterday we had the RBA singing racist chants and stealing a seat.

Whilst there appeared to be a lot of alcohol consumed yesterday by some people I will not buy that as an excuse I get drunk on a regular basis but it doesn't make me sing racist songs!

I now find myself asking the question do I really want to be associated with the RBA if this is what being a member is about?

Nick, you are absolutely right to raise the question.
I am not quite sure what went wrong yesterday, but there was plenty to be concerned about (some of which hasn't been raised on this forum)

As most RBA regulars will be tired of hearing me say, it is about 'self policing', something the Tartan Army sets the benchmark on.
There was actually some in evidence yesterday - a few chants were stifled by certain RBA members stepping in.
I overstep the mark on occasions (usually with my swearing or my belief that the ref should be seeing the game just the same as I do) and could do with a gentle reminder (especially over the example I am setting my 10yo son)

Personally I had no problem with ''We're only here for the curry'' as I actually think this was humerous (suggesting both the footie was irrelevant and that the curry in Bradford would be of a much better standard than in Aldershot, and lots more that could not be construed as racist if you wanted to over analyze the song)

Obviously a number of the other songs would not fall into this category.disbelief

One step we have decided to take today is to issue a code of conduct to remind members of their obligations (one could argue that this shouldn't be necessary, but sometimes we all could do with a gentle reminder)
This will be on all 3 coaches for Grimsby and everyone will be asked to add their signature and commit to helping to make the day enjoyable and to leave a positive impression with the Grimsby fans.

Whilst I don't blame you for questioning your association/membership, I hope that you will give the RBA until the end of the season to prove that they are a positive asset to Aldershot Town FC, and that this will leave you in no doubt in terms of renewing for next season.

the thing that most concerns me is are we even going to have coach travel for much longer?

tony + rba team have made very clear the rules about alcohol and still people are disregarding these rules! yesterday we had somebody smuggle it onto the coach.

i thought the object of leaving earlier was to get to the pub earlier??? hmm

i just hope whoever it was yesterday realises that if 'we' get caught then its not only our own priviledges get taken away but the coach drivers too.

1, Well tony may be you should raise theses points!!!!

One step we have decided to take today is to issue a code of conduct to remind members of their obligations (one could argue that this shouldn't be necessary, but sometimes we all could do with a gentle reminder)

2, What happens if they dont sign your code of conduct?

I for one, am more than able to police myself!!!!???
i aint a hooligan, i dont cause trouble, and i dont have a problem with people singing England, England in the middle of F@@king England!!!
may be not apropriate for an Aldershot game i agree
and as for the curry song whats racist with that??? The british army invented it hundreds of years ago in India covering raw meat in spices to stop it rotting...
yes the indians have brought it on, but who cares its still good S**T!!! lol

im not having a go bazza.

im pretty sure youre not the only one thats done it either.

i have done it before but not since the rule has been in place not to do it mate.

we all love to have a drink, have a laugh and support our team and as you say relieve stress and relax after a long week but none of us want to lose the supporters coaches that tony organises do we?

theyre a great laugh and enjoyable to be on and if they did stop i think alot of us, especially the younger ones like me would have problems getting to away games.

as for being too old. i dont think you are. its good to have a blend of young and old in the rba in my opinion.
